The Department of Neurology has an opening for a full-time, University Staff (unclassified) Tissue Bank Assistant (Laboratory Tech I) position.

The University of Colorado | Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking applications for a full-time, University Staff (unclassified) Tissue Bank Assistant in the Department of Neurology. The general function of this position is to coordinate incoming and outgoing tissue donations, shipments of tissues, and communications with donor families and scientists across the United States. This position is also responsible for proper storage, packaging and tracking of the tissue and information management in the tissue bank database.
_Examples of Work Performed:_
Coordinate in-state and out-of-state tissue donations and tissue shipment.
Communicate with next of kin, funeral home staff and pathologists across the United States.
Attend and assist pathologist with autopsies of in-state/local donations.
Package, label and store tissues by adhering to tissue storage protocols.
Attend monthly meetings to discuss status, issues and needs of the tissue bank project.
Perform the following tasks on a regular basis:
o Updates computer log with tissue information
o Labels samples.
o Orders lab supplies.
o Defrosts freezers.
o Slices CNS tissue and collects samples to fill tissue requests.
o Manages databases.
o Redacts personal health information from documents
Perform administrative duties for the tissue bank as needed such as requesting medical records from other institutions, and reviewing research requests and donor forms.
Perform additional lab duties as well as clinical research administrative tasks such as data entry.
PLEASENOTE:Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.
_Salary and Benefits:_
The hiring salary for this position is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Carry a pager/cell phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week every other month for six months a year.
Lift, push and/or pull up to 20 lbs.

Frequently wash your hands, as biohazardous materials may be present.
Sit and stand for long periods of time, frequently walk, and bend/stoop, as well as execute repetitive motions.
Work with complex and sharp laboratory equipment, and various chemical and biological solutions.
Wear appropriate safety equipment when handling biological samples and hazardous chemicals.
Work within a high-level secured facility.
Bachelor’s degree in biological science or pathology from an accredited institution.
Experience working with web-based tracking systems and Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access).
Experience working with and handling human tissue.
Experience working with pathology processes related to tissue procurement.
One (1) year graduate level Anatomy is desired.
Experience with tissue donations and tissue banking is preferred.
Experience processing blood for plasma, cryopreservation of buffy coat, sorting specific leukocytes, and transport of blood samples from the clinic to the laboratory.

Self-motivated and able to work well independently, as well as within a larger team.
This position requires a thorough understanding of UCD laboratory, research, and HIPAA policies, and fundamentals of neuroanatomy.
Excellent customer service and communication skills are necessary in the coordination of tissue donations and follow up with local kin.
Good organization skills and thorough attention to detail are required to adequately maintain databases and tissues in storage.
